FAQs

Here’s a few of our most popular questions, answered.

How it works

What kind of care will my kids receive?

Every child is unique, so each Nest will look a little different. After agreeing with other parents / guardians in your Nest on schedules and rosters, KidNest partner organisations support you with ideas around how to engage, educate and entertain your kids during the day.

Because you create the Nest as a team, you can shape it to suit your kids’ needs — from playtime and naps to meals and snacks, in home classes, even excursions and day trips. From there, the KidNest app is packed with resources, craft and activity ideas and early learning development tools, to help you care for your kids best.

So this is pretty much daycare/babysitting, right?

Nope! KidNest is a great addition or alternative to your current childcare or daycare, but it’s designed differently. Forget long waitlists, massive costs and long commutes. We connect parent / guardians with other minders to create supportive, local child-minding villages.

It’s a team effort. Each Minder looks after the Nest’s kids — at your place, in your style, on the days that work for you. Together, you’ll share the load and create care that fits your families; getting you back to work, study or play on the other days.

What if my kids need special care?

When finding or creating a Nest, your profile and preferences help you connect with Nests that cater to your child. All parents/guardians are informed of special considerations, needs or requirements your kids may have when you join. That way, they can tailor their care to suit.

Of course it’s up to you to talk with parents/guardians about any medications, timings, food allergies or tools they’ll need to care for your child.

How flexible is a Nest?

Your Nest is built to suit your needs. Unlike formal childcare, the flow of the week is up to you and your Nest. Collaborate with parents / guardians on lessons and activity ideas, arrange excursions and day-trips, and find the balance of days or nights that work for everyone’s schedules.

The beauty of KidNest is that no two are alike. If you need help on weekends, or work night-shifts, there’s a Nest for you. If you want to create Date Night rosters for you and the other parent / guardians in your village — go for it!

And because nothing goes to plan 100% of the time, Messages* makes it easy to tell your Nest about sick days, last-minute changes and emergencies.

Safety + Security

How safe are Nests?

Your kids are your highest priority. So our priority  is to make sure the right processes are in place to make sure, with you, that your Nests are as safe as possible.

KidNest will ensure that all parents/guardians have completed the KidNest onboarding process.

The KidNest Safety Check ensures that each parent / guardians in each Nest completes a home assessment  for every home in their group — which you’ll inspect in person.

Before  creating or joining a Nest, every parent/guardian and minder must have a valid Working with Children Check (which includes a National Criminal Record Check). Plus, you’ll meet the other parent/ guardian in person — agreeing on each part of the Nest setup, and listening to your all-important gut instinct — before approving anything.

What if something goes wrong?

KidNest allows parent / guardians to ‘check-in’ remotely with the App, to make sure all is well with the Nest.

If an incident does occur, the Nest Host that day is  responsible for contacting emergency services or appropriate authorities first and foremost — because safety is always top priority.

Additionally, the KidNest app has quick guides for Emergency Helplines, First Aid information and recommendations for all parent / guardian / minder caring for kids. And each parent/ guardian / minder has peace of mind, knowing they are covered by liability insurance in the event of an incident.

It takes a village — so we’ve got to look out for each other, too.

What kind of checks and balances are in places?

Along with in-person meetings, mandatory WWC, (including National Criminal checks) for parents / guardians/ minders, Safety Checks for home care environments and secure encryption across our website and app, KidNest also allows you to report an incident or lodge complaints, if you ever feel that your child’s health, safety and wellbeing have been affected.

The Basics

Who is KidNest for?

KidNest is for every kind of family. For parent / guardians who need time to work, study and play. And for their kids — everyone from 6-month-olds to school age children.

KidNest connects you with other ‘like-minders’ in your area to create ‘Nests’ of up to 5 kids, tailored to your unique childminding needs, parent / guardians style and schedule.

How much does it cost?

KidNest costs $100/month for the first child you sign up. That’s it. For every child after that, it costs less.

This subscription gives you all of KidNest’s app features — for safely, securely managing your Nest and giving you the resources for minding your kids best. Most importantly, this cost includes liability insurance for you and all the Minders in your Nest.

When you compare this to the average cost of childcare in Australia — $65 – $175 — it makes sense you’d want a smarter way to mind your kids and save  money.

When you sign up for KidNest you sign up for a 12 month subscription, payable monthly.

So, how do I join a Nest?

Once you’ve created a profile on the KidNest app, search your local area for Nests you can join. You can filter your search to find Nests that fit your family best — like special care needs, allergy-friendly homes, irregular schedules or faith traditions. (And if you can’t seem to find a Nest that’s just right, you can create your own.)

When you’ve found the Nest that best suits you, you can apply to join. The Nest Administrator will review your profile with other parent / guardians in the Nest and, if you’re approved for that Nest, set up a time to meet in person.

From there, it’s your decision — check out the home environment, meet the other Nest Minders and go with your gut!

And remember – if you can’t seem to find a Nest that’s just right, you can create your own

Who’s minding my kids?

KidNest connects you with ‘like-minders’ — other parent / guardians in your neighbourhood looking for a smarter way to care for their kids.

You’ll get to know other families, and any additional carers or Minders in the Nest. Each Minder must have a valid Working With Children Check (which includes National Criminal Check), and has assessed their home care environment through the KidNest Safety Check.

Through the week, Nest Minders take turns caring for kids in their home on a scheduled basis. You’ll mind the Nest on your nominated days, leaving you free to work, study or play the rest of the week.

It’s not traditional childcare or family day care. It’s a new model that celebrates the old ways – a flexible, collaborative ‘village’ of connected parent / guardians helping each other care for their kids.

How on earth do we manage that?

The KidNest app is full of features to help you care for the Nest.

Planner*, Calendar* and Day View* make rostering easy and keep you on schedule. Inbox* creates quick, secure communication between Minders. And with verified Check-In, reMinder notifications for important tasks and a Library of tips, activities and early learning resources, caring for the kids in your Nest gets a lot more simple.

How do I cancel my subscription

As you are making a commitment to sharing care with other families we ask you to sign up for a 12month subscription. If KidNest turns out to not be suitable for you, then you can cancel after 3months with 1months notice.
